When the patients report very typical pain present in the lumbar region as well as the affecting the lower limb, the immediate diagnosis is of sciatic pain. The conventional sciatica treatment is followed by advising bed rest so that the condition does not aggravate further. There are doubts about the success of the conventional treatment but subjective benefit has been observed in fairly large numbers of patients.
With the objective of making an assessment in respect of justification of the two weeks bed rest advised as conventional treatment, various research works were conducted assigning conventional bed rest treatment randomly in one group and just observing the events in the control group.
For measuring the outcome the primary as well as secondary methods were also considered.
The decision of the primary measures observed outcome related to the global assessment in the improvement after the elapse of two and twelve weeks by both the doctor and the patients.
The secondary measures made the observation of the outcome reflected in changes occurred in functional status as well as the pain scores, period of absence from work, and the necessity of surgical procedure.
Finally the study observed that in 64 patients among the total 92 patents considered for conventional bed rest treatment reported improvement as against 59 patients out of total 91 patients in control group reported improvement.
Initially conventional bed rest sciatica treatment is the choice & other treatments considered if it fails
